The final Mummy film was very disappointing. The recasting of Rachel Weisz's character ruined the film and the chemistry between Rick and Evy completely disappeared. Maria Bello may be a good actress, but she is not Evelyn O'Connell. The story was good, but the execution was terrible. The whole Chinese army subplot made no sense and Brendan Fraser hammed up his character to the extreme, making this Rick O'Connell a caricature of what he used to be.
Whoever wrote this script clearly turned in the first draft. The only saving grace in this film is Jet Li as the Dragon Emperor, who gave an awesome performance. With a film featuring Yetis making football gestures and the actual line, "Here we go again," it's hard to believe this exists in the same world as the two previous franchise entries which were awesome films. |
After two highly entertaining films, The Mummy franchise falls incredibly hard. Everything that made the original two an extremely fun time is completely taken out of this installment. The cast isn't nearly as engaging and the story mostly a bore. What an incredibly disappointing way to end this once spectacular series.
The first major problem is the recasting of Rachel Weisz's character, Evelyn. Maria Bello is a generally good actress, but she's completely miscast here. She retains none of the traits of the character and shares zero chemistry with Brendan Fraser, Speaking of whom, this is a very disappointing version of his beloved character. Fraser clearly looks bored throughout the movie and most of his lines come off as extremely corny. John Hannah, who was generally reliable in the humor department, also doesn't have a lot to do. The only good performance in this entire movie is Jet Li as the Dragon Emperor. While he is a generally weak villain compared to Imhotep, Li at least gives it his all. The film does feature some fun action scenes, like the snow-top mountain fight and the climactic battle between the two undead armies. It's hard to believe this is the third installment in what was a fun action/adventure movie series. None of the actors, except Jet Li, look like they want to be there and the recasting Rachel Weisz's character doesn't work at all. Even the exciting action scenes can't save this turd of a film. |
