The Mummy Returns (2001)Written and Directed by Stephen Sommers
Starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr, Patricia Velasquez, Freddie Boath, Dwayne Johnson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Sequel to 1999's The Mummy |
I thought this sequel definitely lived up to the first. It maintained the same feel of the first, but managed to be original at the same time. The only gripe I have with this film is the lack of consistency. Why does have Imhotep now have psychic powers? Why wasn't Rick's tattoo mentioned in the first film? Why is the Rock a poorly CGI-ed giant scorpion? It's little things (except for the scorpion) but they don't take away from the quality of the movie.

The Mummy Returns is a solid, enjoyable sequel to the original film that sees the original cast return for another high-flying adventure. While there are plot elements brought up in this installment that were never mentioned in the original, it doesn't take away too much from the overall film. It was also one of the first feature film appearances by The Rock, so that's pretty cool.
The whole cast steps right back into their characters from the original. Brendan Fraser still does a great job of playing the wisecracking hero. Rachel Weisz returns as his wife this time around, while still holding her own. John Hannah is as funny as ever playing Jonathan. He shares great chemistry with child actor Freddie Boath, boasting several hilarious moments with the two. The Mummy Returns is no slouch in the action department, either. It features several impressive action moments, my favorite of which involving the pygmy mummies near the end of the film. The only complaint I really have with this installment is the horrendous CGI of The Rock playing the Scorpion King. It looks terrible and shows why he should never be a CGI character again. Even though The Mummy Returns isn't as grid as the original, it's still a highly fun time that sees an enthusiastic returning cast. Apart from a few nagging issues, I continue to still enjoy the hell out of this movie. |
