Star Wars Episode VII:
|
The wait is over. It's finally here. The most anticipated movie of all time, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Frankly, if the film didn't live up to the hype, there would have been riots in the streets. I think I speak for everyone when I say putting the future of this timeless franchise in the hands of J.J. Abrams was a brilliant move, and this film is comparable to the original trilogy. It's safe to say that Star Wars is back and in some ways, better than ever before.
I shall not break the gentlemen's rule of "No Spoilers." I will say, however, that The Force Awakens is a fantastic film that feels like the classics and is absolutely chill-inducing. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac all play highly entertaining characters that I am looking forward to seeing as our protagonists for the remainder of the new trilogy. They blend in nicely with veteran Star Wars alumni Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill. It's amazing to see Han, Leia, Luke, Chewie, and the droids back together again after all these years. Of course, no Star Wars trilogy is complete without its villain. Leading the pack this time around is servant of the Dark Side, Kylo Ren, played to perfection by Adam Driver. He echos Darth Vader, his idol, and is a great foil for our new heroes. From the moment John Williams's iconic score burst onto the scene, an enormous grin spread across my face like I was the Cheshire Cat. These films have been a part of many childhoods over the years and after the disasters that were the prequels, its refreshing to see a Star Wars film that kept the heart and soul of the original films intact while still daring to go in a new direction. J.J. relied on practical effects as much as he did on CGI, and the blend creates a film that looks both modern and retro at the same time. There's a reason this film is breaking records all over the world. It's an amazing first step in what I'm sure will be a stellar journey for the next few years. |
After years of waiting, it's finally here. The internet went into a frenzy when it was announced that Disney bought the rights and would be making a sequel trilogy. Fans were curious; would it be more like the beloved original trilogy, or the universally hated prequel? As time went on, and trailers were released, it looked to be pointing in the former direction. Once the movie finally released, it was safe to say that Star Wars as we know and love it was back in a big way. The Force Awakens is an overwhelmingly excellent return to the franchise that will please old fans and bring in new ones.
The film's structure harkens back to A New Hope, which proves to be both a good and bad thing. The good part is how it successfully uses it to bring in the new and old characters, along with the newest threat to the galaxy. The bad part is that it can feel like a bit of a retread for fans of the original films. As for the characters, the new cast do an excellent job. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac all play great characters who I look forward to following as our protagonists in future films. They also do a great job of mixing with the original cast members. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill all return as their iconic characters. It's beyond awesome to see these actors return to the fold and a very rewarding experience for long-time fans. As for the villains, Adam Driver does an excellent as Kylo Ren, the primary antagonist for this entry. He portrays a villain who is both highly dangerous, yet sympathetic. I also have to give high praise to director J.J. Abrams for his decision of practical over digital, creating a much more life-like world. Abrams really hit it out of the park with this movie. It was the Star Wars film that fans, just as myself, have been waiting for. From the great characters, to the sinister villain, and the iconic John Williams music, The Force Awakens delivered on every front. I have complete faith in the direction Disney decides to go with these films and look forward to the many years of Star Wars they'll be granting us. I can personally attest now to why this film is breaking so many records and becoming one of the most successful films of all time. While I'm still unsure on the announced spin-off films, I have complete faith in the main episodes. May the Force be with you. |
