Spy Kids 2: Island
|
I enjoyed Spy Kids 2 just as much as the first one, only this time the plot was considerably more fantastical. The chemistry between Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara was much more realistic this time around, and it was neat to see them as seasoned agents. Granted, it's a kids movie, but that shouldn't mean it's any less entertaining.
The best thing about the second film is the ridiculous amount of character actors. We got almost everybody from the first film, plus Steve Buscemi, Ricardo Montalban, Christopher McDonald, and a much bigger villain role for Mike Judge. I absolutely hated Gary and Gerti (Matt O'Leary and Emily Osment). Their characters were irredeemable and contemptible, but I suppose that's why they were in the movie. Every franchise needs its Jar Jar, I suppose. The designs for Romero's (Steve Buscemi) odd creatures were very creative, even if they do look dated as hell by today's standards. This aspect caused the film to dip slightly into fantasy, which is usually fine, but I started to feel like the film was heading towards genre overload. In the end, it all worked out and helped make Spy Kids 2 the only good sequel in this unfortunately uneven franchise. |
