Spy Kids is a movie that, in my opinion, defies all expectations. It's an absolutely terrible premise that had the potential to ruin Robert Rodriguez's career (as the later sequels would nearly do), but somehow the film works. It's a quirky, exciting family action flick with a surprisingly stellar cast and the familiar Rodriguez style and flavor.
The two leads, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara, do a great job of carrying this film, considering their young ages. Joining them is a barrage of character actors like Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alan Cumming, and Tony Shalhoub, with the last two playing the weird villains of the film. The special effects are cheesy by today's standards and the dialogue is pretty silly, but it all seems to help make the film a cult hit that you can watch with your family. Compared to the sequels, Spy Kids is a great movie that should have been terrible but ended up as one of Rodriguez's most successful films. It's creative, it's entertaining, and it has aged acceptably well. Overall, I was genuinely surprised that I still enjoyed this after all these years. |
