Saw III (2006)Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman
Written by Leigh Whannell Starring Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Angus Macfadyen, Bahar Soomekh, Donnie Wahlberg, Barry Flatman Sequel to 2005's Saw II |
Saw III definitely exceeded my expectations for gore. The traps were gorier and more elaborate, particularly 'The Rack.' The stage was further set for the highly intense sequels, introducing us to Detective Mark Hoffman, who had merely two lines but is destined to become a major player in the franchise.
While Angus Macfadyen may not be the best actor, he was certainly fun to watch as he struggled through Jigsaw's highly elaborate trap designed around torturing the people responsible for the death of Angus's character Jeff's son. The final scene is an enormous game changer that actually left the fate of the franchise uncertain, but ultimately shook everything up for the better. |
The Saw series continues to impress with its third installment. The traps were more elaborate and the violence even gorier. At this point, the traps became a more focal point of the franchise, with each movie featuring an iconic one. The one in this particular installment being 'The Rack.' This trap looks extraordinarily painful by Saw standards and is one of the most well remembered.
The performances in this film are good and make the characters that much more believable. Tobin Bell continues to impress as the serial killer Jigsaw. Shawnee Smith is great as Amanda Young, Jigsaw's apprentice who may not be exactly playing by the rules. Donnie Wahlberg makes a welcome appearance as his character from the second film, continuing the saga of Detective Eric Matthews. This was also the first installment to introduce Detective Hoffman, a minor character who would become a major part of the series. Saw III was a great sequel that continued the legacy of Jigsaw and his sick, twisted games. The film rewards it audience by keeping an amazing amount of continuity, a remarkable feat for a horror franchise. It also ended on an amazing cliffhanger that would forever change the franchise going forward. |
