Rogue One: A Star
|
When Disney announced their acquisition of Star Wars, fans across the world were skeptical. Could Disney do right by the franchise and produce a film that could thrust Star Wars back into the limelight? Then The Force Awakens came out and the sun once again shined on Star Wars. But then Disney announced plans for several films that took place within the same universe, but weren't officially "episodes" of the overall series. Rogue One was the first of these, and if Disney continues on the path they've taken this franchise, I think fans everywhere are going to be in good spirits for a very long time.
Rogue One is the story every Star Wars fan wondered about, but never really knew. How exactly did Princess Leia acquire the Death Star plans and set the Original Trilogy in motion? Meet Jyn Erso, the rebel who brought together the team that stole the plans from the Empire in a film that feels every bit like OG Star Wars. Felicity Jones plays Jyn and leads a great ensemble, with these new characters fitting perfectly into the mythology of the franchise. Rogue One builds on Star Wars with a self-contained story with just enough fan service to excite longtime fans but not overwhelm them. This film works as a standalone set within the larger universe, but maintains the same tone as the Original Trilogy. It showcases some incredible action sequences and battle scenes that really emphasize the "Wars" part of the series. I was highly impressed with it and can't wait to see what Disney has up their sleeve for the next standalone film. There's so much untapped potential that they're finally getting into. |
