Very few, and I mean very trilogies are damn near perfect. Especially animated films. I would say Toy Story being the rare case, but they went and made a fourth movie. Luckily, How to Train Your Dragon is the very rare case of a solidly crafted trilogy. Each film builds off the previous one and gives us a pretty good conclusion. I remember being actually quite surprised by how much I liked the first film. Because of it, I have no shame in saying I saw the second one with a friend in theaters and found it to be even better. Now, here we are with the third film. And what did I think of it? Let’s get into it.

In a quick nutshell, I really liked this movie. The Hidden World is a great conclusion which brings everything to a very nice close. I’m actually a little sad we won’t be getting any more of these wonderful films. It helps that everyone brings their A-game (like they were all on the same page of this being the final one). The animation, which has always been top notch in this series, is the best in this installment by far. From the various dragons to the title location itself, this is some of the best animation I’ve seen. It’s really amazing to see how far animation has come since its early days. The actors don’t slack either. Each one brings the same talent and charisma from previous entries. Minus T.J. Miller, who was not in this installment due to some allegations and court cases causing the producers to fire him.

You don’t get many great trilogies like this one. Usually, there’s a screw up somewhere. But, somehow How to Train Your Dragon stayed a consistently good trilogy with a good conclusion. While I will be sad to leave this wonderful world filled with interesting characters; it’s nice to have a definitive ending. Now let’s hope they don’t pull a Harry Potter and do a spin-off franchise which just pales in comparison to the original series.
