I personally thought this one was poorly adapted from the source material. Though the movie itself was good, they left out a good chunk of the book. I feel like the entire Ministry of Magic storyline had more to tell that I remember reading about, but it was left out.
That being said, this remains one of the best films in the series, most notably because of Imelda Staunton and Helena Bonham Carter's respective performances as two despicable new villains. The story is brilliant, what with the Ministry turning everyone in the wizarding world against Harry and causing him to finally doubt himself. Performance wise, this one is superb. I feel like this franchise had been waiting for a director like David Yates, who helmed the final four films with tremendous care and made them some of the best in the series. I must also praise Daniel Radcliffe for giving what I thought was his best performance in this fifth film. He faced the difficult challenge of taking a character he'd been playing for four films and turning him into almost a hollow shell of who he was. He played it perfectly and helped make Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix a great film despite everything that was left out of it. |
I found this one to be a huge improvement over the previous film and, even though a lot was cut from the book, it was still a solid adaptation. The storyline was much improved, with the threat of Voldemort being all the more present. This was also greatly showed with how the Ministry launched a campaign against Harry Potter and his peers turning their backs on him.
Imelda Staunton was excellent Dolores Umbridge, becoming easily one of my most hated characters ever. Helena Bonham Carter was also excellent as Bellatrix Lestrange, perfectly playing a very insane person. A big improvement from the last film and just all around great film. |
