Friday the 13th Part VII:
|
The New Blood was a fairly lackluster entry in the Friday the 13th franchise, but also had some unbelievably badass kill scenes (see above for epic weed-whacker kill). The title makes virtually no sense and the story is painfully odd. The character of Tina Shepherd, who possesses psychic powers i.e. Carrie-style is a very bland and uninteresting protagonist to follow Tommy Jarvis, who at least was likable 60% of the time.
Kane Hodder shines as the best version of Jason Voorhees we've seen yet, with his hulking presence making the masked killer much more intimidating and terrifying. The film itself falls short of its last entry and I can see that the series is beginning to lose its luster. |
The New Blood is where the series started to falter in quality and lose a lot of its steam. To begin with, the title doesn't make any sense in relation to the plot. I'm still trying to understand what exactly they mean by the new blood. The protagonist is quite dull and uninteresting. The idea of her having psychic powers seemed really outlandish to me, even though this is a series about an unstoppable killing machine that legitimately dies and is then brought back to life Frankenstein style. With that said, psychic powers were still too much.
This entry has, for whatever reason, also had some of the least interesting characters. There's not all bad, though. This was the first film in the franchise to introduce Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees. He completely owns the role and finds a way to make Jason a little more terrifying. I'm glad he came back for three more films. Also, this entry featured some of the more unique and brutal kills in the franchise (see above screenshot for an idea). A rather lackluster entry that featured some of the more inventive kills and Kane Hodder as Jason. |
