A Nightmare on Elm Street 4:
|
This seemed to be the point in the Elm Street series where they stopped caring about characters and plot and just did whatever the hell popped into their coke-fueled minds. The Dream Master is a disappointing hodgepodge of 80's cliches stuck together with the glue that is Freddy Krueger.
While it is definitely a weak film, it is still better than Freddy's Revenge, but in the long run, that isn't really saying much. What made this film so oddly terrible was the constant nods to The Karate Kid that did not fit and only made it worse. If they had left that out, maybe this would have been a little better. |
This is when the series really jumped the shark and started to falter in quality. It's always when Freddy became less scary and more comedic. The story line was paper thin, to say the least. It was also filled with some of the series more ridiculous moments. To name at least two, Freddy being resurrected by dog urine and an invisible Freddy doing karate against one of the characters.
The film does stay held together, at least, by Robert Englund's continued excellent performance as Freddy Krueger. I will also say that Freddy's "death" is one of the more interesting in this installment. Even though this is definitely one of the weaker films, I still didn't find it all that bad and enjoyed some aspects to it. |
