Zoolander is a hilarious satire on the fashion industry that's since become a massive cult comedy. It features one of Ben Stiller's funniest characters, clueless male model Derek Zoolander, who's so stupid that almost everything he says is absolutely ridiculous. Loaded with celebrity cameos and a slew of comedy all-stars, it's no wonder this film has remained considerably funnier than its belated sequel and stands as one of the best films in Ben Stiller's filmography.
The plot is goofy as hell, with fashion mogul Jacobim Mugatu brainwashing Zoolander to kill the Prime Minster of Malaysia after he pledges to stop sweat shops from making his clothes. Will Ferrell absolutely kills it as Mugatu, delivering one of the funniest characters of his career and one of the best comedy villains ever. Owen Wilson plays Zoolander's arch-rival Hansel, who's every bit as stupid. The funniest scene in the movie is their "walk-off," where they compete on a runway to see who's the best fashion model, all of which is refereed by David Bowie. Scenes like this and a witty script help make Zoolander a comedy gem. I enjoy watching this movie time and time again, as it never fails to make me laugh. Every actor in it excels at creating hilarious characters you can't help but love for their sheer idiocy. I knew a sequel wouldn't work from the moment the first trailer hit. While comedy sequels almost always bomb, this film could only stand alone as a cult comedy classic that can never be replicated for fear of becoming too stupid. It's a fine line that few films can walk, but it's safe to say Zoolander accomplishes it effortlessly. |
