Twin Peaks: Fire

Obviously, Fire Walk with Me was made for fans of the cult series Twin Peaks. Who else would go see this movie? I finally tackled it after watching the original run of the series for the first time. The show is harrowing, engaging, and has a truly frustrating ending. The film follows the opposite trajectory, starting out with a confusing, unnecessary beginning that never gets resolved, and then diving into the final days of Laura Palmer (Lee). Lynch's direction is on point, and the performances are just as strong as they were in the show, particularly Sheryl Lee, as she finally got her chance to shine as arguably the most important character in the Twin Peaks universe, Laura Palmer.
We open with FBI Agents Chet Desmond (Isaak) and Sam Stanley (Sutherland), who are sent to the town of Deer Meadow to investigate the murder of Teresa Banks (Gidley). Upon their arrival, Agent Desmond vanishes into thin air. We never touch on this plot thread again. Instead, we meet Agent Dale Cooper (MacLachlan), who has a premonition about who the killer will go after next. Cut to Laura Palmer in the town of Twin Peaks. She's a teenager going through some tough times. Addiction, abuse, psychic flashes, and everything else. It's all things that were touched on in the show, and it's neat to see Lynch tie it all together, even if it is extremely weird and hard to follow at times. Fire Walk with Me is a decent movie, but I think Lynch tried too hard with it. It's overly long and features several unnecessary plot threads that never get pulled. There are times where it feels like the pilot for an entirely new show set in the Twin Peaks universe. But I digress. Fans of the show have stood behind this film for years, and I've heard that the recent revival series actually answers some of these questions and makes the film better retroactively. Well, that's next on my list, so we'll see. |
