Trick 'r Treat is one of the most entertaining and original horror films in recent years. It features a varied cast of character actors all centered around a new horror villain called Sam (short for Samhain), a sock-faced little boy who will stop at nothing to make people respect Halloween.
Sam acts as the defender of Halloween, refusing to stand idly by while people screw with the traditions of Halloween. The film's respect for tradition coupled with the left-field plot twists help make this film an enjoyable and refreshing horror flick that will become the new generation's Halloween. I found this film to be immensely entertaining and recommend it to anyone who is a fan of interwoven stories and classic horror. Sam is on his way to becoming a cultural icon and I cannot wait for the inevitable franchise. |
Trick 'r Treat is considered by many horror fans, myself included, to be one of the most criminally underrated horror films in recent years. This is an excellent film that enriches itself in the Halloween spirit and tradition, has tons of great black humor, and features horror's next great icon in the form of Sam, a sock-faced boy who brutally makes sure everyone respects the holiday that is Halloween. A horror film that deserved to get a theatrical release, instead of the straight-to-DVD release it got.
The anthology angle used for this film is absolutely top notch, with the stories weaving in and out of each other. This really helped the later twists and revelations that feel much more refreshing. The film's use of Halloween tradition really sets it apart from other horror films. As I stated earlier, this isn't a film that merely takes place on the scariest holiday of the year, it completely immerses itself into it. Like the classic Halloween, this is another movie that has become my standard holiday viewing. Trick 'r Treat is a wonderful horror film that deserved a better release than the one to got. Sam has become a new horror icon, the black humor is on point, and the interwoven anthology angle is a refreshing change of pace in today's horror landscape. A sequel was recently announced, for a theatrical release this time, and I am more than excited for it. |
