I felt that The Strangers was a great example of psychological terror, and did a solid job of showing how vulnerable we all are in our own homes. I was hoping for more to happen in the film, but I understand that with such a small cast, it wasn't bound to have much occur.
Still, the film does accomplish what they set out to do. The scares are aplenty, and it's very clear that the writer/director has some experience with home invaders. The strangers are terrifying, especially since you can never see their faces clearly. It reminds me of Halloween, and shows this generation a new kind of boogeyman. I think it's a solid horror flick that will resonate with virtually anybody. |
The Strangers was a solid horror film that relied heavily on suspense instead of blood and gore. The film does a great job of showing how people are never truly safe, even in their own homes. The film does this by employing a generally oppressive atmosphere and a small cast.
Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman do a good job as the couple who are terrorized by a group of serial killers. They really sell the horror the couple is facing as the attacks start escalating. Speaking of terror, the strangers are one of the more frightening horror characters in the genre's history. Their reasoning alone will send shivers down your spine. They are definitely cemented in horror history. This is a solid horror flick that relies on psychological terror instead of gore. While it can be amazingly depressing with its bleak atmosphere, this is still a good horror film with terrifying villains. |
