The Mitchells vs.
|
I remember seeing the trailer for this over a year ago, when it was called Connected. When it never came out, I assumed the pandemic postponed it and it left my mind completely. Then it resurfaced as The Mitchells vs. the Machines and I figured it would be dumped onto Netflix but never gain any traction. Then the reviews came out and were overwhelmingly positive, and since I have a personal goal to see as many 2021 films as possible this year, I threw it on. The Mitchells vs. the Machines is one of the funniest family comedies I've seen, with a hilariously original story and great, realistic characters.
Katie Mitchell (Jacobson) is quirky, weird, and loves to make her own movies. Her family has never understood her, and she's excited to finally make her own way in life at college. Her father Rick (McBride) means well, but he always tried too hard. Her mother Linda (Rudolph) wants everyone to get along. Her brother Aaron (Rianda) loves dinosaurs. During their family road trip to California to take Katie to college, an app becomes sentient and takes over the world with a robot army. The Mitchells are the only humans who weren't captured, so it's up to them to put aside their differences, work together as a family, and stop the robot apocalypse. The animation style is similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the writing is stellar. The Mitchells vs. the Machines has already become critically acclaimed and is gaining attention on Netflix. I definitely recommend checking it out. It's fun for the whole family and also imparts some good life lessons about appreciating your family and finding your own path in life. Plus, their weird pug is voiced by an actual dog. That's pretty neat. |
