The Maltese Falcon is one of the finest noir films of all time, and one of Humphrey Bogart's best performances. Bogie's portrayal of legendary detective Sam Spade dominates this iconic film and provides a template for all future detective movies from Chinatown to Blade Runner.
The story is a fun old-fashioned who-dun-it? with the priceless Maltese Falcon at the heart of a murder plot. Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet play the villains impeccably, with Lorre's performance going down as one of the most unsettling and enjoyable villain performances of the 1940's. This film is considered a timeless classic for a reason and that reason is beautifully clear. |
The Maltese Falcon is a great classic detective story written by one of the classic detective writer Dashiell Hammett. Samuel Spade is one of my favorite characters he is just so, for lack of a better word, “sassy.” The film is soaked with hidden imagery and hidden characteristics of characters that you may not see if you don’t pay enough attention just like a lot of 40’s Film Noirs. If you like detective stories and really charismatic main character then this is your kind of film.
