I must say I'd hoped for better. I was never a fan of the decision to split the final Hunger Games film in half and after waiting a year to see the last installment, all love I had for the franchise seems to have dwindled away. Mockingjay Part 2 is a lukewarm finale to an otherwise exciting series, ending a phenomenon not with a bang, but with a whimper. The film sports a large crowd of disinterested actors and repetitive dialogue that reminded me how unoriginal this series was in the first place.

I will give credit where it is due. The assault on the Capitol and the swarm of freaky-looking Mutt creatures was done very well, though I felt bad for any kids watching the movie. After seeing those things, they'll probably have nightmares for weeks. Though for a film that's over two hours long, I feel like this was its only redeeming quality. This is clearly a cash grab, and I always hate it when a film is so obviously a cash grab. While the book may not have been the ending the fans wanted, it at least was evenly paced out and somewhat satisfying. I suppose it was the complete lack of chemistry between Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson that ruined the film adaptation, as well as the horrible way they handled the death of Primrose.

I'm disappointed that it ended like this. This franchise converted me with Catching Fire and turned me away with this film. It's a reminder that young adult fiction has become so incredibly formulaic that it is difficult to tell the difference between a Hunger Games film, a Divergent film, or any of the other film and book series involving some sort of post-apocalyptic teen death game against a tyrannical government. It's time to flip the script. Go back to the drawing board. You might learn something.
