The Great Outdoors is the only time we ever really saw Dan Aykroyd and John Candy together onscreen, and by God, they were magnificent together. This film is downright hilarious and one of the best in both of their extensive filmographies. Coupled with a great supporting cast and a number of unforgettable comedic scenes, The Great Outdoors is a surefire family hit that deserves way more attention.
Chet Ripley (Candy) is looking forward to a nice, quiet lake vacation with his family. But his arrogant brother-in-law Roman Craig (Aykroyd) shows up inivited with his wife and kids, and suddenly, Chet is close to exploding as he must deal with Roman's ridiculous bullshit. It's a classic comedy trope that's done so, so well with both Candy and Aykroyd giving their all in what could've easily been a write-off movie. Instead, these two men work hard to make The Great Outdoors a nonstop hilarious comedy. I particularly love the scene where Chet devours a 96 ounce steak in a food challenge. The Great Outdoors is a film I could watch over and over again whenever it's on. It never fails to make me crack up and I show it to all my friends and family whenever I get a chance. If you love John Candy and Dan Aykroyd, there's no doubt in my mind that you will adore this 80's gem. |
