I love me some Ozploitation because the Aussies really know how go for it. Mad Max is one of the earliest genre movies from the Land Down Under that made an impact on the world of cinema. While this doesn't reach those lofty heights, I enjoyed this one. The story centers on two friends who are abducted by mysterious people who leave them in a creepy, disorienting eucalyptus forest. Kayla finds herself alone and quickly finds that she's not alone; she's being hunted by hulking brutes in frightening masks. Information is slowly released and I found myself trying to guess what was really going on because it's not as straightforward as you are led to believe.
This film uses the concept of The Most Dangerous Game and twists it with a bit of Hostel and delivers a kangaroo-strength kick in the teeth with the violence and gore. The practical effects are well done and are quite cringeworthy at times. You are taken on a brutal journey with Kayla as she tries to find Maddie as well as survive the killers and the other women as they turn on and use each other in order to make it out alive. Shudder is carrying this exclusively and it premieres October 3rd so if you haven't gotten a subscription yet, what are you waiting for? |
