This movie is the one that finally earned Scorsese his Oscar. It is written so well, you never know who is good or who is bad. Scorsese's style is delightfully clear and his return to mob films is marked with the addition of "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones.
The performances in this film are some of the best in the actors' respective careers. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg are all at their very best in The Departed, sporting Boston accents and kicking ass. I also love the music in this film, particularly the use of the Dropkick Murphys' hit single "I'm Shipping Up to Boston", which fits the tone of the film perfectly. I'm so glad Scorsese finally won Best Director. While I still think he should have won it for Goodfellas, I'm still glad he won for The Departed. Scorsese is one of the greatest film directors in history and this film is definitely one of his best. |
