Something about the colors and tone of India just meshes perfectly with Wes Anderson's artistic vision. I'd heard this movie, much like Isle of Dogs, was a tad culturally insensitive, but I don't think it was. We're supposed to be seeing India through the eyes of three fairly odd brothers who are there to have what every white person calls a spiritual journey. So, yeah. I enjoyed this one from beginning to end, thanks to the impeccable chemistry among Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman, not to mention Anderson's continuously impressive character development and production design.
A year after their father died in a freak accident, Francis (Wilson), Peter (Brody), and Jack (Schwartzman) reunite on an Indian train called the Darjeeling Limited. They hope to re-bond while on this spiritual journey, but their constant trust issues and overconfidence keeps getting in the way. Along the way, they learn a lot about each other and what they are capable of. In the end, they grow a lot personally and become better people. It's an enjoyable, tight hour and a half that feels as Wes as you can get. The Darjeeling Limited isn't really considered to be one of Anderson's best films. It didn't get any Academy recognition and it's got a surprisingly low Rotten Tomatoes score at 69%. But it is worth the watch. Take it from me. Any movie that shows off the landscape and culture of a country as gorgeous as India, and is also full of dry wit and great character moments, is going to be worth it. |
