I'm really surprised The Brothers Grimm received such a vast critical backlash. I highly enjoyed this fairy tale adventure. It had cool effects, a neat plot, and interesting characters. While Matt Damon and Heath Ledger did tend to ham up their performances, they did have considerable chemistry that made me believe they were brothers.
What this film has going for it are the brilliant reimaginings of the classic Grimm fairy tales and how each one is essentially a horror story in itself. Most notably, the film's take on 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'The Gingerbread Man' are incredibly disturbing and may actually give you nightmares. The whole subplot with the French army is not particularly interesting, with Jonathan Pryce phoning in his performance with a lousy and laughable French accent. But thankfully, the French don't take up too much of the film. For me, The Brothers Grimm is a Halloween staple and a fun film to watch. While you may not enjoy it that much on the first viewing, give it time and you will find something to like about it. |
