Sean Baker decided to make this project using iPhones and transgender actresses to play the hookers. To say this is a refreshing movie is an absolute understatement. It cost around $100,000 to make and made under a million at the box office. There’s profit there, but no real income for the kind of attention a movie like this deserves.
The film opens up with a conversation between Sin-Dee who just got out of jail and Alexandra, another transgender woman and sex worker. Alexandra reveals to Sin-Dee that her boyfriend and pimp, Chester is cheating on her with some cisgender bitch. Chester is played by James Ransome so terrifically. I will always see him as Ziggy from season two of The Wire. His real name in The Wire is actually Chester, which had to influence this character. Anyways, he’s a real loser who Sin-Dee sets out to find during this whole film. She has to confront him and hear it from him in person that he is cheating. Sean Baker is a ridiculously talented creator with other films like Take Out, Starlet, and The Florida Project in his filmography as well. I expect big things from Baker after The Florida Project made over 10 million dollars at the box office on a two million dollar budget and got Willem Dafoe an Oscar nomination for his role as Bobby in the film. All of that happened because Tangerine demanded some attention once it spent a couple years on streaming services. I found it and now I show it to anyone who is interested. |
