Spy was yet another hilarious collaboration between writer/director Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy. This film was funny as hell, excitingly action-packed, and contained a bunch of wonderful cameos. Needless to say, I enjoyed Spy quite a bit.
Melissa McCarthy is in top form, holding her own against heavyweights like Jason Statham and Jude Law, both of whom were also exceedingly brilliant in their respective comedic roles. Spy marks Statham's first comedic appearance and I certainly hope it isn't his last. He basically played an over-the-top version of himself, with his character constantly boasting about his ridiculous feats and his excellence as an agent, while constantly being incompetent. He would've stole the show if not for the hilarious banter between McCarthy and Rose Byrne, which only got funnier as the film progressed. I was surprised at how this film managed to be a satire on the spy genre without dumbing down any of its characters. I greatly appreciated that Spy was a film that didn't treat its audience like idiots and remained a smart, funny action comedy without becoming a mindless spoof, which could have easily happened. For that, Spy definitely gets my seal of approval. |
Spy was the third collaboration between comedienne Melissa McCarthy and writer/directer Paul Feig, which proves to be their funniest. This was a hilarious film that perfectly pokes fun at the spy genre with great action and hysterical moments. It also showcases a surprisingly funny performance from action star Jason Statham. Needless to say, I had a good time with this film film.
Melissa McCarthy is, once again, hilarious in the lead role of Susan Cooper. She does a great job of playing a more low-key type of humor in the first half of the film, before launching into her more signature style later on. Jude Law was also brilliant as the best agent in the CIA, sharing several funny moments with McCarthy. Rose Byrne was also funny, with her banter between her and McCarthy becoming increasingly more funny as the film progressed. The one that took me by complete surprise, however, was Jason Statham. Generally known for his serious action films, he steals the entire show as Rick Ford. His constant boasting about his accomplishments and how great of an agent he is, while being completely incompetent, lead to several of the film's more laugh out loud moments. To further up the laugh factor, his character just keeps popping up out of nowhere. Stat ham had me in stitches and I hope to see him in more things like this. Spy was a brilliant satire on the spy genre, with several laugh out loud moments and a hilarious cast. Melissa McCarthy continues to prove why she's one of the best comediennes around. Jason Statham shows he can do more than just beat the crap out of people onscreen. I had a great time with his movie and genuinely hope for a sequel with the same cast. |
