Wow, was this movie creepy! Sinister is one of the most disturbing and realistic horror films in recent years and, in my opinion, has successfully achieved cult status. The character of Bughuul is nothing short of terrifying, looking like Beetlejuice's roided-up older brother and carrying a horrifying penchant for children.
While I've never really been a fan of Ethan Hawke, he does an okay job of carrying the film. His scenes with the home movies are the scariest, as they look way too real and will cause your heart to jump into your throat. After seeing Scott Derrickson's skill with crafting a fearful atmosphere, I am excited to see him helm Doctor Strange. Overall, Sinister is a truly scary movie that features an antagonist that is the stuff of nightmares. Bughuul will make you remember this film, as it is definitely worth watching. |
Sinister definitely lives up to its name. A generally creepy horror film with a terrifying plot and unsettling horror villain. The character of Bughuul is downright scary, both in appearance and what he does to the families' throughout the movie. The film also featured several scenes that legitimately got under my skin and, in some instances, had me jump from my chair.
While I've always been indifferent to the presence of Ethan Hawke in a movie, I generally enjoyed him in this. He plays a decently likable character who is trying to do the best for his family and figure out all the sinister things going on in his house. The director, Scott Derrickson, also does a fantastic job of creating a tense, claustrophobic atmosphere, adding to the overall creepiness of the movie. The film is at its scariest when it shows the home video footage of the families' murder. These videos are intense and downright terrifying to watch, creating a sense of unease in the viewer. While the film also features some notable scares in the house, the one that has always stood out to me is what I like to call a ghostly version of Hide and Seek. This scene gets me every time and has me looking over my shoulder, just in case. Sinister was a great, little scary movie that featured tons of terrifying imagery. Apart from Vincent D'Onofrio's exposition character and an unnecessary jump scare at the very end, I really enjoyed this movie. I look forward to Bughuul's creepy adventures in the sequel coming out this year. |
