Second Breakfast: October 2023
By Austin Johnson
Welcome back to Second Breakfast! Gonna change it up slightly for my October watches. Last month, I built a Fellowship of my nine favorite performances/characters. This time, I’m gonna build an Evil Fellowship. I watched mostly horror in October, so I’m going to pick nine villainous performances/characters that could take down the competition and get the Ring for themselves. Below is a list of the films in the order that I watched them in October and then below that is The Evil Fellowship. Let’s get rockin’.

First up in the Evil Fellowship of October is Scott Foley as Roman Bridger in Scream 3. I fucking adore the Scream franchise and now that we have had a couple of legit additions last year and this year, I will be rewatching all six every year. Scream 3 is seen as the weakest by many, but I disagree. It’s absolutely bonkers and has the most dangerous killer as far as body count goes. Roman Bridger/Ghostface stabs nine people to death and does it all alone which is rare because every other Scream film has multiple killers. He’s not afraid of the moment, so he would be huge in The Evil Fellowship when slaughtering needs to happen.
Next up is Cynthia Bond as the alluring Temptress in Def by Temptation. I had never seen this film before and my goodness is it an experience. Oozing with style and showcasing a killer cast, Cynthia Bond rises above the rest with a dominant performance as her beauty ensnares her prey. She would totally persuade the real Fellowship into sexual situations, only to kill them so she can get closer to the Ring. It’s weird to think about, but if you watch Def by Temptation, you know that shit would go down.
David Howard Thornton does amazing work as Art the Clown in Terrifier and Terrifier 2. My wife and I watched Terrifier in the middle of October, which I had seen but she hadn't, so it was pretty entertaining to watch her reactions to the extremely gruesome content that happens over the course of about 80 minutes. It’s an absurd film with an even more absurd killer, but I think he would be great for The Evil Fellowship because he clearly doesn’t give a fuck about anyone. I like the idea of Gimli talking shit to him. Could be a fun battle.
We have a total wild card up next. I watched Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight for the first time and my gosh, it fuckin rules! William Sadler and Billy Zane are both lights out, but Zane literally plays a demon called The Collector who has wild powers. He could make Boromir do whatever the fuck he wants him to with an incredible amount of ease.
One of my favorite horror films from the 21st century is Jennifer’s Body. I think it’s a wonderful high school film as well as just a great comedy horror film. Megan Fox knocks her role as Jennifer Check out of the fuckin park. She is a great addition to the squad because of her ability to lure men in for the kill. Temptress and Jennifer Check? Good luck, lads!
I used to have a major blind spot when I first joined Filmgazm. It was the gems of the 80s. I had seen some of the classics, but I hadn’t quite figured out just how many personal favorites lie within that decade. I joined over 5 years ago and pretty quickly, Connor and I started sharing films with each other on the pod and just as friends. It’s the best when we get to marry those things just like we did when Connor introduced me to Fright Night through doing an episode on it. I’ve now seen it a few times and when I watched it in October, I raised it from an 8 to a 9. Four stars on Letterboxd to four and a half stars. It fucking rules and at the center is a terrific performance delivered by Chris Sarandon as Jerry Dandridge, a vampire who is sexy and extremely convincing when he’s preying on people to keep him alive. Him, Jennifer Check, and Temptress would be literally fighting over bodies. Frodo doesn’t stand a chance.
Time to get silly. I love picturing Ken Page’s Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas wreaking havoc in Middle Earth. I feel like if he got the ring in his possession, he would gamble with it immediately. Are you a gambling man, Gandalf?
The Shining has been and always will be in the running for my favorite horror film of all time. It’s honestly so good that it’s sort of annoying. When I watch it, I wonder if I’m watching the greatest thing ever made. There’s no way to actually know that, but it crosses my mind. Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance is a fucking match made in heaven. Or maybe hell. Torrance would try to write about The Evil Fellowship as they travel but all we would get is “All work and no second breakfast, makes Jack a dull boy.”
The last member of The Evil Fellowship of October goes to one of the most iconic horror characters of all time. What Nick Castle does as Michael Myers in the original Halloween is hall of fame level shit. Extremely daunting and physically dominant performance. He would fucking crush anyone who is carrying the ring because he doesn’t hesitate. Michael might even get the ring in the Shire before anything even goes down because Bilbo and Frodo don’t stand a chance. Or he might leave the ring alone because he’s just looking for the hobbit version of Laurie Strode. It’s an interesting thought.
