San Andreas was a predictable disaster flick that was essentially a carbon copy of 2012. Having said that, the film is extremely entertaining and made me scared to ever live in California. The characters are realistic and likable, while the science is believable. That's pretty rare for a disaster film.
Dwayne Johnson actually stretches his dramatic muscles, providing charisma and some surprise tears to a great performance. The supporting cast all does an equally great job and makes San Andreas entertaining and fun to watch. Obviously, this film wouldn't have been great if the effects hadn't been great. The earthquake effects were stellar, giving audiences a realistic look at what L.A. and San Francisco would look like post-giant earthquake. Needless to say, it's crazy. I think that the critics have yet again missed the point of this film. San Andreas is another disaster film that is meant to entertain with crazy effects and big name actors. It's not gonna change the world, but I'm okay with that. San Andreas is by no means a bad film and I urge more people to give it a chance. |
San Andreas is another movie in a long line of entertaining disaster flicks. It features a likable cast of characters and some truly impressive special effects. Even with those two positives, it does suffer with a lackluster story. But in all fairness, who really cares when you get to see the massive destruction of California with Dwayne Johnson leading the movie. So, at least it knows how to keep you entertained.
Speaking of him earlier, Dwayne Johnson continues to be a reliable actor, while stretching his dramatic muscles a bit. Along with his usual charisma, he also has a scene where he sheds some tears. Of course, all this leads to another great performance of his. The rest of the cast also do a serviceable job. The only problem I had was making someone like Paul Giamatti serve as essentially the movie's exposition. A general waste of a talented actor. As for what everyone wants to see in a movie like this, the destruction of San Francisco does not disappoint. The earthquake and tsunami effects were top-notch to watch, really adding a sense of fear to the picture if this were to actually happen someday. The only part where the CGI stood out in a bad way was a car crash in the beginning, making me guess they had already used up their budget at that point. Apart from that, the rest looked spectacular. While San Andreas isn't going to win any awards, it's still a lot fun. It's another entertaining disaster film where you get to watch a lot of things get destroyed in an epic fashion. Dwayne Johnson is always fun to watch, especially as he tries to save his family. For anyone looking for an entertaining popcorn flick, San Andreas doesn't disappoint. |
