Rambo III (1988)Directed by Peter MacDonald

Rambo III was highly disappointing and was not, in my opinion, on par with the first two. The third installment of this epic series actually seems more like a parody of the franchise.
First of all, besides Rambo, there are no other memorable characters. The first two had solid supporting casts that made Rambo seem like a leader instead of just a mindless killing machine. This film had none of the substance of the first two and completely avoided the subject of American troops returning from Vietnam, which was the heart of the first two films. Overall, I was very disappointed with Rambo III and consider it to be the weakest link of an otherwise epic action franchise. If you can get past this one, the Rambo series is still a solid win. |
Rambo III is by far the weakest entry in the entire franchise. The third installment of this high octane franchise is a complete letdown that feels completely distant from the previous two. It also loses a good chunk of the heart of the series.
Besides Stallone, most of the characters were generally forgettable. The cast doesn't do much to impress and it comes through in their characters. The idea to transport the action to the Middle East was also a terrible choice, as it took away from the Vietnam theme of the previous films. The Russians also came off as mere stock villains, instead of being a truly menacing threat for Rambo to face. Overall, Rambo III is a massive disappointment in an otherwise awesome franchise. It feels nothing like the previous films and doesn't even have the same heart running through it. Skip this one if you can. |
