Poetic Justice isn’t just a great song by Kendrick Lamar featuring Drake, but it’s also a great film. This is John Singleton’s second film after Boyz n the Hood in '91. Both films are very poignant, but Poetic Justice really focuses on love. Janet Jackson plays a reserved girl named Justice who works at a salon and writes poems in her spare time. Tupac plays a mailman named Lucky who raps in his spare time. It’s a very simple story, but the style makes it rewatchable as can be.
Lucky is timeless, and quite possibly the best character Tupac gave us. He’s hilarious and quick tempered, but tender and relatable in the right moments. I don’t think Regina King has ever been more in the zone comically than playing Justice’s wild card friend, Iesha. Janet Jackson was born to play this role. Her hair, blue jeans, and beret are iconic. We also get appearances from Michael Rappaport, Roger Guenveur Smith, Q-Tip, Tyra Ferrell, and Maya fucking Angelou! It’s nonstop entertainment for everyone to enjoy. |
