I have had the opportunity to get to know the creator of this piece, Jeremy Sumrall, and he is a student as well as a fan of the heyday of horror cinema. That's what you're getting with Pickaxe along with copious amounts of boobs and blood. The tagline for this movie should have been: There will be boobs and blood. If you get your hands on a DVD (which I did directly from Jeremy and he also signed it!) or rent it from Amazon, do so with a group of friends and prepare to have fun. You aren't going to get a high brow horror flick here. You also won't be disappointed as this film would be right at home on the shelf at any video store in the 80's.

We are treated with the always great Tiffany Shepis as Adrienne, a survivor from the first time Alex Black walked the earth. Also making an appearance is A. Michael Baldwin everyone's favorite BOY from Phantasm (aka Connor's all-time #1 horror film; I kid, I kid) as the once deputy now Sheriff Mathews. Shepis is great in this and always give maximum effort in her work.

You will get familiar feelings while watching this. "I've heard that name before." "Wasn't that from this flick?" That's because Sumrall is giving us his love letter to 80's slashers and while some influences are more overt than others, the entire decade's output is getting a wink and a nod. Pickaxe is yet another addition to my ever expanding list of Party Movies. I enjoyed it on my own but would happily throw this on and enjoy the mayhem with my friends because this movie was made by one of us: a fan of the genre. Long live boobs and blood!

You can find Jeremy's production company at First Week of Winter Films.com. While you're there, check out the shop to get a signed DVD of Pickaxe (totally worth it and personally recommended) as well as t-shirts for his upcoming project, Cannibal Call Girls from Hell! All profits from purchases go to funding the production! So put your money where your heart is and support indie horror and indie filmmakers!
