Oscars 2019
By Austin Johnson
We have reached that time of year again, when films get recognized, awarded, and praised. On Sunday night, the Dolby Theater will be packed with faces we all know, dressed in clothes that we can all only dream of having. It’s a fascinating event that
everyone has an opinion about. I heard Sean Fennesey of The Ringer say that there’s probably about one million people who truly care about the outcome of the Oscars. Plenty of people always tune in, but they just go to work the next day. Well, here at
Filmgazm, we care a whole lot. We even did a podcast of our own awards, so go check that out if you haven’t already.
We have a wide variety of films on display this award season, and a true Best Picture race that is extremely unpredictable. 2018 films brought on controversy at times, but man oh man, we have some great stuff to look back on forever. I was able to see a
massive amount of films in 2018, mostly with my girlfriend, then a handful with Filmgazm founder Connor Eyzaguirre, and then a select few by myself. I cherish the experience of going to the theater, and have to say that this year’s Best Picture nominees are all great big screen films. Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born absolutely floor you with their sound alone, Black Panther is a Marvel movie, so everyone knows how cool that looked, and then The Favourite played with our perspective as creatively as we have seen in recent memory. Every one of the nominees has something to say for why it could be a winner, and I have enjoyed the anticipation more than I ever have. After The Shape of Water winning last year, I expect a much better film coming out on top this year.
Connor and I have both seen every film that is up for Best Picture, which is how it should be prior to the awards happening. We exchange texts about our anticipation for the Oscars, and make cases for every film, actor, director, etc. We agree, disagree, and
discuss everything. I am going to state my case for what I think should win though. After seeing every film and pondering over what I hope to see etched in stone forever, my mind can’t avoid Alfonso Cuarón's Roma.
The black and white Netflix film that people should’ve watched over that pile of s**t Bird Box movie. Sure, you have to read subtitles for two hours, but this is the masterpiece of 2018. S**t, it’s one of the only film masterpieces of this decade in my opinion. I really hope that the Academy can break its habits and award a foreign film with the highest honor they have. Maybe Green Book will win, causing controversy for a film that seems to be just above average. Maybe Bryan Singer’s half directed Bohemian Rhapsody will win, or Black Panther, one of the most successful movies of all time. Bradley Cooper took care of a long running story, doing everything a man can when making a film, and that may not win anything. Maybe McKay’s brilliant portrayal of Cheney, Vice will win. I really don’t know, but I truly believe that Roma is the best choice. When we look back at the winners in 10 years, I think Roma will be the standout no matter what happens.
