Olympus Has Fallen is an exciting unofficial remake of Die Hard that stars Gerard Butler in one of his few decent films. I reviewed this film back when the website first began, only I found it bland and inferior to White House Down, which came out the same year. Since then, Olympus Has Fallen has spawned two sequels and become a franchise, so I felt it was time to revisit it. It's definitely a fun watch that will make you feel fiercely patriotic, unless you're North Korean, but what are the odds of that? Sporting a great cast and an unoriginal but engaging story, this film has everything an action junkie could want.

Butler plays former Secret Service Agent Mike Banning, who left the president's detail after an accident that claimed the First Lady's life. But when North Korean terrorists attack Washington D.C. and siege the White House, Banning becomes the only man left who can stop them and save President Asher (Eckhart). It's pretty cheesy and predictable, but thanks to the impressive direction of Antoine Fuqua, it becomes something substantial. I must praise Rick Yune's performance as Kang the terrorist, as well. He plays a great sociopathic monster. This film depicts a highly detailed, surprisingly realistic invasion of our nation's capital. There are times where it gets a little unnerving, I won't lie.

Olympus Has Fallen is a great Fourth of July movie. It gave Gerard Butler a much-needed franchise vehicle, and it keeps you engaged from beginning to end. I haven't watched the two sequels yet, but I do plan on it. I doubt they can keep the momentum going, as action franchises tend to get stale awfully fast. But this one tells a neat story, embraces its R-rating, and swings for the fences.

Olympus Has Fallen proved to be an enjoyable, badass action movie. While the plot is fairly simple, it was still engaging and featured great action scenes. Gerard Butler was great in the lead role, showing everyone that he is a great action movie star.

Aaron Eckhart did a serviceable job as the president of the United States. Rick Yune  was great as the terrorist leader taking over the White House. The rest of the cast was also great in their roles. A solid, badass action movie that fully embraces its R rating and is very entertaining.
