Nightcrawler was an eerie movie driven by the excellent performance given by Jake Gyllenhaal. While the film does drag at times, the writing is never lacking. The world of freelance journalism is a dark underground and it disturbs me that people really do go about it like this.
The character of Lou Bloom is one of the most sociopathic, unlikable characters in recent years. Everything about him is creepy and terrible, but he is incredibly well written. There are very few good movies that showcase the daily life of a crime journalist and Nightcrawler does a great job of showing how dark and screwed up it really is. Overall, I think that the second act could have been fluffed up a bit but the film more than makes up for it with a crazy third act. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers his best performance since Donnie Darko and makes Nightcrawler disturbing and entertaining all at the same time. |
