Monk is one of the best detective shows ever made, as it flawlessly combines the crime genre with the comedy genre while simultaneously acting as a drama of sorts. Tony Shalhoub delivers the performance of his career as the titular Adrian Monk, who will go down in TV history as the king of genius detectives.
The whole idea of a borderline psychotic, OCD, germophobic crazy man, who just happens to be a brilliant detective, was genius. This show has since become a template for modern detective-with-a-twist shows like The Mentalist. The supporting cast is great as well, apart from Bitty Schram as Sharona, who is extremely heartless and apathetic for a nurse. Thankfully, Ted Levine and Jason Gray-Stanford balance it out.
I've always enjoyed this show and it delivers a hilarious yet brilliant first season right out of the gate. With all the OCD situations that Monk gets himself into, it's kind of hard not to empathize. After all, who hasn't felt the need to straighten a picture on the wall or winced at the sight of someone wiping his nose with his bare hands? Monk speaks to the germophobe inside all of us, making this a very enjoyable show.
