Miller's Crossing was a phenomenal drama that focused on a relatively unmined era: Prohibition. The whole film makes you wonder just who exactly Gabriel Byrne's character, Tom Reagan, is loyal to and what his ultimate endgame is. And of course, the result is fantastic and well-played.
The Coens are master storytellers and this film is no exception. I loved every second of this softspoken mob drama that relied less on vulgar language and more on realistic scenes of vengeance. The performances were astounding, especially Gabriel Byrne and John Turturro, both of whom are criminally underrated talents who deserve much more recognition than they've gotten in their respective careers. With this film, the Coens let Hollywood know that they were here to stay and their welcome will most likely never be worn out. |
