If there was a pick-up game involving hoopers from films, Quincy McCall would be a high pick. That’s Omar Epps's character in this love story between two dedicated basketball players. It was Gina Prince-Bythewood’s debut film and probably her best. Spike Lee and Jay Stern helped produce the film, but it’s all from Gina’s mind.
Quincy and Monica (Lathan) become friends at a young age through the sport of basketball. They have a cute romance as kids, but the feelings grow as they grow into highly ranked high school prospects. Their careers take turns that test their playing abilities as well as their mental abilities. They must figure out the balance of love and basketball. Epps and Lathan crush it in this film as the two main characters, and Dennis Haysbert the Allstate guy also does a fine job as Quincy’s father who happens to play for the Los Angeles Clippers in the film. If you like a good love story, this is something for you. If you like basketball, this is something for you. If you like both, then definitely check it out! |
