Halloween III:
|
Let me just preface this review by saying this. Halloween III makes no sense and you're gonna hurt yourself if you try to find any. That being said, it has a cult favorite vibe to it that keeps you from turning it off. It's easy to see why Halloween fans in the early 80's were outraged by the exclusion of horror icon Michael Myers. Of course, him being replaced by an evil Halloween mask company didn't help much either. Believe it or not, the film is not half bad until the horrible ending, which is where I gave up on trying to find the plot amidst a sea of poorly thought out ideas.
John Carpenter stayed on as producer and composed the score, which is why this feels like one of his worst films. I actually thought it was one of his creepiest film scores and it worked with the scenes featuring the scary super-strong businessmen (who turned out to be robots filled with yellow goo. You can't win 'em all). The acting is terrible and is only made worse by the laughable dialogue they have to say. I don't buy for one second that Tom Atkins is a doctor. Electrician, maybe, but not a doctor. The villain's evil plan has no point, apart from just killing children for the hell of it. There's something to do with Stonehenge and ancient Druid magic as well, but at that point I'd already checked out and was waiting for this horribly misguided sequel to end. I can see why fans of bad movies found things to like about it. It does have its moments of terror, but it's mostly bogged down by its own ridiculousness. It's become a Halloween staple for a great many people, but I'm a purist. I say you can't have a Halloween movie without Michael Myers and when you try, you get Season of the Witch. It could be worse but it absolutely could and should be better. |
