Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the most exciting surprises of all time. Nobody knew what the hell it was and it looked like a surefire flop. When it proved to be one of Marvel's best films and grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide, it made sense that a sequel would be on the way. But would that sequel continue Marvel's nearly flawless record and still maintain the spirit and chemistry of a film nobody thought was gonna work? In short, absolutely. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is yet another epic masterpiece from Marvel Studios and the best way to kick off the 2017 summer movie season. While it doesn't quite measure up to the perfection of the first film, it is still one hell of an adventure that delivers an emotional punch in the midst of a thrill ride.
The chemistry among the principle cast is still very much alive, and newcomer Mantis (Pom Klementieff) fits in perfectly with the original team. This film fleshed out the fan-favorite characters of Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), giving them purpose and meaning behind their cool designs. Of course, the character most fans were looking forward to seeing was Ego the Living Planet, played with gusto by Kurt Russell. Ego is a complex and mysterious character who brings a whole new level of power to the MCU. His inclusion in the film means even crazier things are well on their way. The many cameos and confirmation of several enduring fan theories only serve to make this sequel a worthy successor and impeccable next chapter in the continuously unbelievable Marvel Cinematic Universe saga. Guardians 2 ups the emotion and travels into some previously uncharted waters for Marvel, creating events that I hope are a sign of things to come for more gutsy moves in future films. Overall, this film is simply fantastic and another incredible piece of Marvel's ongoing puzzle. Can't wait for Vol. 3. |
