Comedy is interesting. We tend to get a troupe of comedic actors who make a batch of extremely funny films and we grow to love them. Then, they start to branch out and we get a dry spell before the next comedic troupe takes over. The most recent example of this being when Seth Rogen and many of his friends exploded onto the scene. We got some very beloved comedic actors out of it like Paul Rudd and Jonah Hill; along with some classic comedies like Superbad and Pineapple Express. Good things must come to an end, though. Eventually, they started to go their separate ways. Some went into hiding due to recent allegations, some went serious, others went to Marvel, and the rest seemed to focus on a career behind the camera. But that isn’t to say the spirit of their comedies have died. Good Boys is a perfect example of that.
The first way this spirit is achieved is by the cast. Tremblay, Williams, and Noon are absolutely wonderful. They share a considerable amount of chemistry together and bounce jokes off each other very well. All three actually feel like best friends on the cusp of becoming teenagers and facing their first challenges of growing up. Which brings me to my next point. Something I’ve always enjoyed about Rogen and his troupe’s comedies is the constant theme of friendship and growing up. It makes for a sweet, and relatable, message under all the crass jokes. Good Boys does a great job of continuing this theme. But, while this is all good, what’s a comedy without some funny jokes? Well, this film is filled with them. There are several laugh out loud moments to be had during its runtime. My personal favorite being one of the kid’s obliviousness to his parent’s increasingly complex sex toys. Good Boys really reminds me of the comedies I enjoyed growing up. It’s filled with hilarious moments and a great message. No, it’s not filled with the actors we’ve grown accustomed to see in this type of comedy. But, the spirit is still there. And, until we get another comedy troupe, I’ll gladly take this movie. Good Boys is a good, hilarious time. |
