Fans have been waiting for decades for a Godzilla movie of this caliber. It's unlike any monster movie that came before it. A big issue that people had with the 2014 reboot was that it was fairly dull. It focused too much on the human story and didn't feature enough monster action. Well, that changes now. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a movie made for the longtime fans who've been dying to see Godzilla duke it out with his longtime rivals and enemies in beautiful, magical Hollywood CGI. With this explosive follow-up, we get fully-realized versions of Rodan, Mothra, and the evil King Ghidorah, along with the best version of the king himself ever put to film.
As far as the human side of things, I felt this film had a good balance between human and monster. I liked most of the characters and understood their involvement in the story, but of course, like (hopefully) everybody, I was here for the monsters, and boy, did this film not disappoint. The battle scenes are unbelievable, and you can feel the epic scale of it. These creatures' sizes are immense, almost the size of entire cities. You can almost feel the ground quake beneath your own feet as these monsters lay waste to one another in scene after scene of nonstop action. Studios can take a lesson from Legendary's Monsterverse. It's a subtle build-up to creating a shared universe with Godzilla and King Kong. It's not forced, it's gradual. This film ties in nicely with 2017's Kong: Skull Island, and next year's epic showdown between the two Titans will be pure Filmgazmic. I've been hoping to see a Godzilla film that embraces the craziest aspects of this universe, and it's finally here. Long live the king. |
I am a big fan of the 2014 Godzilla. A lot of people complained there wasn’t enough monster action, but I got where the filmmakers were coming from. They wanted to reintroduce the titular creature to American audiences after the disastrous 1998 film while also laying the seeds for a possible Monsterverse if it were to be successful. And, luckily, it was. With that success came more freedom. Which leads us to the all-out monster brawl that is Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Based off the amount of fun I had with this one, I can’t wait for next year’s Godzilla vs. Kong. It’s going to be epic.
Like I said earlier, this film gives us exactly what many people complained about in the previous outing. And that is a whole lot of monster action. Each fight scene is beyond impressive and a constant joy to watch. It also helps that many classic monsters are entering the ring. Mothra. Rodan. King Ghidorah. And the Big G himself. Watching these titans duke it out is everything I absolutely wanted and this film delivers. Add to that the impressive special effects on the monsters and the gorgeous cinematography, and you have one of the summer’s most fun films. Not all is great, though. Much like the previous film, the human characters and story are okay at best. They move the story along just fine, but you’re really just waiting for the next fight scene when they’re on screen. Luckily, the film does know this. I love Godzilla. I grew up watching the films throughout my childhood and never grew tired of the Big G beating up other monsters. I loved the introduction we got to him with the 2014 film and the promise of a Monsterverse. And, finally, I absolutely loved what this film delivered. Laying the groundwork for the main event next year while also giving us a string of rousing fights, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the one you’ve been waiting for. Let them fight! |
