Freddy vs. Jason (2003)Directed by Ronny Yu
Written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift Starring Robert Englund, Ken Kirzinger, Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, Kelly Rowland, Brendan Fletcher, Chris Marquette, Katherine Isabelle, Lochlyn Munro Spin-Off of 1980's Friday the 13th and 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street |
What's not to like about Freddy vs. Jason? It's two of the most famous movie monsters of all time duking it out. It's freakin' awesome to say the least. Robert Englund returns to play Freddy Krueger in his last big screen performance as the killer, and continues to shine in every scene. Ken Kirzinger was a decent Jason, but I still would have preferred to see Kane Hodder return to the role.
The human characters weren't your typical horny teens. They actually had a bit of substance and I actually cared about them more than I usually would. The big climactic showdown is one of the coolest fight scenes of all time, with both Freddy and Jason using every tool at their disposal to finish the other. I also really liked the music in this movie, as it was a blend between the music from the original Friday the 13th and the original A Nightmare on Elm Street. I think this crossover is an awesome movie and why it didn't spawn a movie monster crossover franchise is beyond me. |
After years being stuck in development hell with numerous scripts being made, Freddy vs. Jason finally came out and gave us the bloody, glorious showdown between two of horror biggest icons. It was worth the long wait. The story that brought these two together actually worked pretty well, with Freddy using Jason as a way to scare the kids into believing in him again. As it was meant to be, Jason goes on a rampage and Freddy now has to stop him. Luckily, Robert Englund came back to play Freddy Krueger, showing everyone why he was meant to play this role. Ken Kirzinger plays Jason Voorhees in this installment, giving a good performance of the icon. While he did good in the role, I would have loved to see Kane Hodder come back to reprise the role.
The big climactic showdown between Freddy and Jason was awesome. I loved how the film had them fight each other on their respective worlds, starting in Freddy's dreamworld and ending at Jason's Camp Crystal Lake. It was bloody, over-the-top, and everything I was wanting in a showdown between these two icons. The human characters weren't too bad, with some of them having you actually care about them. I also liked how they mixed the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street theme music together, indicating what's about to go down. If there's one negative I have about this film, it's that we never got the sequel it hinted at in the end. I would have loved to see more horror movie crossover films. A great, fun film that feature two of horror's biggest icons in a match to the death. |
