Foxy Brown is probably Pam Grier’s most well known role from the blaxploitation era in the 70’s. She consistently teamed up with writer/director Jack Hill, but Coffy from '73 and Foxy Brown are seen as the two best. They are very similar in plot and style, but if you like the rowdy shit going down in the blaxploitation films, then they’re a must. I personally like Coffy more, but the title Foxy Brown is so easy to remember and correlate with Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown from 1997, which also stars Grier. Either way, Foxy Brown is absolutely off the wall and badass.
Foxy Brown wastes no time jumping into its story as Foxy’s government-agent boyfriend is killed by some members of a drug syndicate. This sparks a kind of fire in Foxy that you don’t want to get in the way of. She starts posing as a prostitute to infiltrate the drug business and find her boyfriend's killers. Her brother, Link gets involved in ways that a brother just shouldn’t, so Foxy gets some help from some friends of her own. It’s Foxy vs a whole bunch of criminals as she goes down a path that only the strongest of people could survive. Foxy Brown is full of guns, boobs, drugs, and badass combat from Pam Grier. She’s an absolute star and carries the film with tenacity and grace. I could watch her beat the shit out of horrible people all day, which is typically what she’s doing in all of the blaxploitation films she appeared in. The music and production design create an atmosphere that is addicting. You can’t look away when watching the madness of Foxy Brown. |
