Foxcatcher was an unbelievable story about the mentally unstable billionaire John du Pont and the lengths to which he was willing to go to ensure his legacy. The film is quite slow, but the story is amazing and the performances are absolutely top notch.
Steve Carell proves he has the talent for dramatic roles with his performance as John du Pont. Carell was a chameleon, blending into the role with ease and revealing his brilliance as an actor. I am very surprised that Channing Tatum didn't receive any accolades for his performance as Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz. He also stepped out of his wheelhouse in a role that allowed him to prove he can lead dramatic projects, and his chemistry with Mark Ruffalo is one of the reasons this film worked. The story of Team Foxcatcher is a crazy one that ends in tragedy. It's ultimately a tale of obsession. Like I said, the film does tend to drag but it's definitely worth a watch for the performances alone. |
Foxcatcher is a good film that slows the toxic relationship between billionaire John du Pont and Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz. A chilling retelling of real life events that ultimately lead to tragedy. While the film can be slow at times, the performances from the three leads are outstanding and keep you invested.
The film tells the real life of story of how Mark and Dave Schultz became associated with the mentally unstable John du Pont and his obsession with winning the Olympic wrestling match. Steve Carell plays the aforementioned du Pont, a role not typically associated with the famous comedian. Luckily, he more than proves his worth for dramatic material and gives an excellent performance. After this role, I hope Carell pursues more dramatic material. Channing Tatum also stepped out of his wheelhouse of action and comedy, bringing to life Mark Schultz. He also really proved himself here as he immerses himself into the role. Mark Ruffalo does a great performance as older brother Dave Shcultz. The chemistry between him and Tatum makes the film work a lot and has you believe they are real life brothers. The real life story of Foxcatcher is one that ultimately leads to tragedy. Whether you are familiar with the real life story or not, the ending will shock you in its cold-bloodedness. As I said earlier, the film may be slow at times, but it still keeps your attention thanks to the excellent performances from its three leads. |
