Even if you know nothing about WWE or wrestling in general, Fighting with My Family is still a very enjoyable dramedy about how important it is to follow your dream and believe in family. Saraya Knight aka Paige is the youngest WWE champion in history and her story is one I never knew I wanted to see. She comes from a family of wrestlers who held their own tournaments in her hometown of Norwich, England and for whom the WWE was the ultimate dream. It's a relatable story because it appeals to the dreamer in all of us.
Florence Pugh is Paige, and she does a great job of playing an outsider who wants to achieve her dream without losing her identity and her family. Her relationship with her brother Zak (Jack Lowden) becomes strained when she is accepted into the program and he isn't. This estrangement is the main source of drama in an otherwise hilarious movie that features an extended cameo from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and a great comedic performance from Nick Frost. Most surprising for me is how interested I became in learning about the WWE after seeing the movie. It's a soap opera in spandex, as Vince Vaughn puts it in the film. Fighting with My Family is an endearing, heartfelt, funny story about perseverance and the strength that you can only find in yourself and your loved ones. I enjoyed every second of it and I think it can appeal to a lot of moviegoers if they give it a chance. Great cast, fun story, and a surprising amount of emotional moments. |
