Fast & Furious Presents:

Who would have thought the Fast and Furious franchise would become this huge? I definitely didn’t. But, after showing a considerable amount of chemistry in The Fate of the Furious, it was decided to give Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham their own spin-off movie. That’s right, not only are there eight main movies in this franchise, now there is a spin-off movie. Does it fall flat on its face? Simple answer, no. Instead, Hobbs & Shaw is a hugely entertaining film with plenty of action and humor. Screw it, bring on the sequel.
As I just stated, Johnson and Statham showed a considerable amount of chemistry on screen together. Both played into their larger than life action star personas and provided many of the funnier moments in The Fate of the Furious. It was quickly decided to give the characters their own movie. So, naturally, production began. And not without some controversy. Several actors from the main series made their anger well known. To the point that neither Statham and Johnson will not be in any other main Fast and Furious films. And, as evidenced in this film, for the better. The chemistry between the two leads is still great, making every funny line spoken and fist thrown a joy to watch. Not that the other cast members fall behind. Idris Elba is clearly having a lot of fun in the villain role. Vanessa Kirby is a solid addition as Statham’s sister who can also hold her own in a fight. As for the signature action and humor, it’s still very much there. The action looks great and the humor is on point. To think, this used to be about racing cars. Finally, look out for two seriously hilarious cameos. I really hope both actors come back for the sequel. Hobbs & Shaw is a whole lot of fun. It’s funny. It’s action packed. And the two leads chemistry couldn’t be any better. If you’ve been enjoying this franchise and were looking forward to this spin-off, you won’t be disappointed. Now to see if the main series, which still has two films left in it, can top everything in this one. It’s a tall order, but this series has surprised in the past. |
After seeing their unlikely chemistry in action in 2017's The Fate of the Furious, it was only natural that a spin-off would be made starring the two most entertaining characters to ever come out of this inexplicably appealing franchise. Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Statham) must work together to save the world from a cyber soldier named Brixton (Elba). It's just as over-the-top ridiculous as it sounds, but I'll be damned if it isn't hilarious and entertaining. I can understand why Vin Diesel is pissed, considering Dwayne Johnson has effectively stolen his signature franchise right out from under his nose.
As expected, the chemistry between Johnson and Statham makes this movie not only bearable but hilarious from beginning to end. Their excessive insults that just get crazier and their alpha male egos colliding make for some of the stupidest dialogue I've ever heard, but with a natural charisma that can only come from two superstars who know exactly what kind of film they're making. The story is just generic enough to work, and the sequel set-up is blatantly obvious, but there's something about this film, and this franchise as a whole. It became watchable at part 5 and has only gotten better. Who'd have thought? I appreciated the cameos that were kept under wraps, and I can't wait to see what's in store for this franchise's future. With Fast 9 set for release next year without Johnson and Statham, I can't imagine it'll be as successful as the others. Nobody's watching these for Vin Diesel anymore. Johnson and Statham kick ass as Hobbs and Shaw, and I think this film's inevitable success will only prove that. |
