Richard Linklater has worked extremely hard to create original films that we can relate to and adore. His ability to create authentic characters has been on display for twenty plus years, but in 2016, he may have created his best collection of characters with Everybody Wants Some!!. We are immediately told that it is 1980 and that Jake (Blake Jenner) is arriving at a house, with a title sequence proclaiming that class is starting in three days and fifteen hours.
We are quickly introduced to a lot of people without even realizing it, just like Linklater did with Dazed back in the early nineties. All these guys embody collegiate athletics which is perfect, as our setting is a home that houses baseball players. Testosterone and a full fridge of beer is constant, with relatable dialogue holding this film together. There’s no time for rest or breaks, because the film moves in a way that makes the next moment the most important part of the plot.
When you are watching this film, you take away two hours of pure entertainment. It’s going to be underrated for years to come, but those who have seen this know that this is a f**king gem. We don’t come across high quality, realistic tones and dialogue too often. Everything is capes and tights in Hollywood, causing films like this to pop every second. I highly suggest grabbing a six pack and taking on this hilarious watch.
