Super Hero was the first Dragon Ball adventure that I got to see on the big screen. Not only was the movie exciting and engaging, but it is also dominating the weekend box office, holding off films like Beast and Orphan: First Kill. Not too shabby. I'm a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, and I was looking forward to this one, which looked like a refreshing change of pace while also a celebration of the anime's past. I was right. This movie unites plot threads and characters from all three canon generations of the franchise: Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super. The result is an epic rejuvenation that pits Gohan and Piccolo against Goku's oldest foe: The Red Ribbon Army.

For once, Goku and Vegeta cannot be counted on to win the day. They're off world, training with Beerus and Whis. So, when Commander Magenta recruits Dr. Gero's brilliant but naïve grandson to make powerful new androids, Piccolo and Gohan have to be enough. Dr. Hedo thinks he's working for the good guys, so he builds Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, androids who think they're superheroes fighting for justice. Of course, there's also the secret project that turns out to be a rebooted version of Cell, this time dubbed Cell Max. That was an epic opportunity to bring back my personal favorite DBZ villain in a big way.

The 3D animation is a bit wonky at times, and I know it's really gonna piss off some sticklers out there. Personally, I didn't mind it that much, particularly when it came to the fight scenes. It was cool to finally see Gohan in his rightful position as Goku's successor, and his new transformation brings new thoughts into how powerful he really is. This movie is pretty damn cool and I think DB fans everywhere will find something to like about it.
