Dr. No is the film that started it all. The girls, the gadgets, and the martinis all started with this introductory film into the Bond franchise. Sean Connery mastered the role of James Bond almost immediately, forging this masterpiece and paving the way for one of the greatest franchises ever, as well as proving to the entire world that spy movies would never be the same again.
This film utilizes Ian Fleming's love of Jamaica by immersing the entire movie in its music, its culture, and its gorgeous landscape. Bond's mission to identify the murderer of a colleague leads him to the isle of Crab Key, home of the enigmatic Dr. No. Joseph Wiseman was the first actor to portray a Bond villain and he set the bar for egomaniacal. Alongside Bond is Honey Ryder, played by the lovely Ursula Andress, who also set the bar for Bond's leading lady. Overall, this film has everything it needs to set the precedent for what would become one of the most profitable film franchise of all time. It begins an interweaving plot thread throughout the Connery era of the organization known as S.P.E.C.T.R.E. (Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion), with Dr. No being part of it. Watching it today, you can clearly see why it continues to hold up and has remained one of Bond's greatest adventures. |
