Despicable Me 2 managed to retain the wit and charm of the first film while still building on the world around it. It might not have exceeded the first film, but it was definitely still an enjoyable film.
Steve Carell continues to bring Gru to life with ease and his vocal chemistry with Kristen Wiig's character Lucy was impeccable. I also enjoyed Benjamin Bratt's performance as Eduardo, the Mexican stereotype who was secretly the luchador-clad supervillain El Macho. The scenes where Gru was trying to keep Eduardo's son away from his daughter were hilarious and the mutated minions were equal parts funny and terrifying. Overall, I enjoyed the second Despicable Me but I still thought that the first one was better. Still, this isn't a sequel that I expected to succeed and I am glad that I enjoyed it for the most part. |
